Poem: Cherry Tree Roots

my day

Happy Super Blue Moon everyone. The next blue moons will occur in a pair in January and March 2037, 14 years from now! I hope you get a chance to see the moon tonight.

Today I’m feeling a little feisty. I took the day off work to take care of two important appointments. Thought it would be a walk in the park, taking care of business, you know. However, each appointment was more challenging than I had planned for. Ever have one of those days? I had to stand up for myself. This is normally an uncomfortable position for me if you can believe it. When the person I’m questioning is in a position of power and has a higher education it is especially intimidating for me. I tend to freeze up, like the “existential crisis” cat in the video. Since 2010 I have developed a set of tools to help me during situations like today. I’m not perfect at this “system”, but I’m learning.

1) Before I react, I need to cool down.
2) During the cool down, I attempt to articulate my emotions into words.
3) I begin forming a reply, or plan of action
4) After the event ran its course, I reflect
5) Be kind to myself & do something I love

So poetry is something I love. I polished off this old poem from 2018 with a horrible title “Cherry Tree Roots” and thought I’d share it with you. The title had good intentions, based on an article I read on a gardening site about how difficult it is to remove the roots of a cherry tree. Even though the tree is cut down to a stump, shoots will keep coming up for years afterward. I was trying to connect these difficult roots with a person or event in your life you can’t get rid of. Please let me know if you think I captured it. This is another poem in the series of unpublished poems that I will never publish but are dear to me. Perhaps you’ll like it. It’s on the house!

Cherry Tree Roots

fruit flesh
softens, bruises
falls off the pit of us

It would be nice
to pluck that word
stuck in the slit
betwixt my teeth

tongue plays at it
floss won’t reach it
those words
I’m sorry

your love is
the sun
in May
that woke
the root

Here’s a my mood in a meme meme. Stay fresh my friend. Fresh like a newly baked pie, easy as Sunday morning, as laid back as Loki, as quiet as calm.
